In an post this morning, New Haven Independent founder Paul Bass announced the resumption of comments on Independent articles. The move comes with several reforms to the commenting process and structure. Commenters must register with their real names, though comments can be posted anonymously. Comments have a word limit, and not all comments that meet the new criteria will be posted. Finally, two veteran journalists will serve as volunteer editors for the comments, lifting the burden off of the Indpendent’s staff writers. The comments on Bass’s post announcing the return of commenting were overwhelmingly supportive of the move, though several conveyed reservations about possible “censorship” and the opacity of the editing process.
